BLOB'S PARK
FOUNDED:
1933
PURPOSE:
To provide a bit of the homeland for all to enjoy.
As a boy of 13, Max Blob and his family, emigrated from Vogenberg, Germany (near Passau, in Bavaria), in 1896. Max was the oldest of three sons born to Katherine and Phillip Blob. His brothers were John and Henry. They settled on 150 acres of open farm land and woods in Jessup, Maryland. About 10 years later, they built the farm house that Max lived in the remainder of his life and is still occupied with family members.
A small building containing a bowling alley was added to the property in 1925. On Sundays, Max would take a truck to the Baltimore ethnic community and bring back some friends for dancing, dining and bowling. In 1933, when prohibition ended, he opened "Blob's Park" for business.
In 1942, Katherine and John Eggerl, Max's niece and her husband, moved in with him to help him run the farm and business. The Eggerls had 5 children and as they became of age, they too became involved.
In February 1956, an electrical fire destroyed the interior of the hall, but within 6 weeks a newly renovated Blob's Park was open for business again.
Uncle Max, as most people called him, died February 1969, but the Eggerl family continued to operate the business. As a matter of fact, as the Eggerl children married and had children, Blob's Park began drawing on a third generation of employees. It was at one of the grandchildren's birthday parties that the idea for a new hall was born. After much soul searching and planning, this new hall was opened on June 25, 1976. Farming of the land was stopped shortly after this. The old hall was thereafter used for private parties until May 1980, when it was burned to clear the area for an outdoor pavilion. This pavilion is now used most weekends from May through October.
Blob's Park has many Special Celebrations during the year. May Day is celebrated every Mother's Day in May, and the Sonnenwendfeier (the longest day of the year) is celebrated on Father's Day in June. The first Octoberfest in the United States was held at Blob's Park in 1947 and continues to be celebrated the first weekend of every October! Other special days are Bavarian Day in September, a children's Christmas Party when Santa Claus and St. Nicholas visit and present every child with a gift, and a gala New Year's Eve Party.
The dining and dancing continud every weekend at Blob's park until New Year's Eve 2007.
BLOBS PARK IS UNDER RENOVATION.
